How to Store Microgreens for Maximum Freshness

Microgreens are delicate, and to preserve their flavor and nutritional value, proper storage is key. Here are some tips for storing your microgreens to ensure they stay fresh for as long as possible.

1. Refrigerate Them Promptly

As soon as you receive or harvest your microgreens, place them in the fridge. Most microgreens will stay fresh in the refrigerator for 7-10 days, but it's best to eat them sooner for optimal flavor and nutritional content.

2. Use a Paper Towel to Absorb Moisture

Moisture is one of the main factors that cause microgreens to wilt or mold. To extend their freshness, wrap your microgreens in a paper towel before placing them in a container or plastic bag. The paper towel will absorb excess moisture, keeping the greens dry and fresh.

3. Store in an Airtight Container

Place your wrapped microgreens in an airtight container to limit exposure to air, which can cause them to deteriorate more quickly. If you don’t have a container, you can use a resealable plastic bag with as much air removed as possible.

4. Avoid Washing Until Ready to Use

It’s best not to wash your microgreens until you’re ready to use them. Excess moisture from washing can promote mold growth and shorten their shelf life. If needed, rinse your microgreens gently with cool water just before eating.

5. Use a Fresh Produce Drawer

Microgreens should be stored in the crisper or fresh produce drawer of your refrigerator. This area is designed to maintain the ideal humidity levels to keep fruits and vegetables fresh.

By following these simple steps, you can ensure your microgreens stay fresh, crisp, and packed with nutrients for longer.
